Original Items: Only One Set Available. The “782 Backpack system” (1941 haversack and knapsack) was introduced in mid-1942 to replace the M1928 haversack. It consisted of the upper portion, the haversack and the lower portion, the knapsack. Can be worn in various combinations depending on the requirements of field gear and equipment.

This is a lovely example that shows just how creative an individual can be when it comes to needs. For some reason, this Marine took his P-41 knapsack and added M36 combat suspenders to act as shoulder straps. He more than likely wanted to do away with the double pack system.

The inside flap is stamped with USMC / BOYT / 43 along with the Marine’s named stenciled below as H. N. PADDOCK. We did a quick search and unfortunately came up empty with service information, but that doesn’t mean you won’t! This is a wonderful research opportunity.

The condition of the pack reflects long service. There is fading and stains present, but no significant damage. The pack is still quite solid with all stitchings and buckles still intact. This example definitely saw use and was not abused.

Included inside the pack is a lovely reversible camouflage rain poncho. If you read Guadalcanal Diary, author Richard Tregaskis' first-hand account of the Marine Corps' early days of fighting on the Pacific Island, you will find several references to the lowly poncho's role as a shelter from the elements. These WWII USMC ponchos are hard to find today, especially one in excellent condition. The ponchos are reversible pattern poncho with green camo for the jungle and tan camo for beach sand camouflage. These ponchos came in two styles: one style had snaps that allowed the wearer to fasten the poncho around his arms like sleeves like this example - the other had no such snaps.

Comes more than ready for further research and display!
